Angelina Jolie's art purchases
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt recently attended a show for the artist Banksy, and Ang snagged a few choice pieces. We're big fans of Banksy's art work and thought you might enjoy seeing the interesting mix Angelina purchased...
More on the art work and a shot of the piece Angelina told Brad she "must have" below!...
A $226,000 painting - titled "Picnic" - depicts a white family of four merrily lunching under an umbrella on a red checked blanket while 15 starving Africans - including several children with distended bellies - look on. A $75,000 purchase - a white bust with a bleeding bullet hole in the forehead - was a particular favorite of Jolie's. "She went nuts for that one," an onlooker told the mag. "She told [her baby daddy], 'I must have that one.'" For another cool $75,000, she picked up a portrait of a man hit in the head with a custard pie.' Related Groups:

September 19, 2006Dosh Taps Andrew Bird, T'nT for The Lost Take
Dosh Taps Andrew Bird, T'nT for The Lost Take
Tapping TNT generally not conducive to one's well-being Anticon composer Martin Dosh will release his fourth solo disc as Dosh, The Lost Take,
on October 17. It's a bit reductive to call this a solo release,
though, as Dosh recruited some of his chief musical pals to record for
the album, turning the Dosh experience into something of a Twin Cities
Lovefest.A horde of Minnesota cats-- from Tapes n' Tapes guitarist Erik "I Am Not Horatio" Applewick to Dosh's sometime bandmates in Fog, including multi-instrumentalist Michael Lewis (also of Happy Apple) and guitarist/producer Jeremy Ylvisaker-- all contribute to the record. One non-Minneapolis marquee musician, Andrew Bird, appears on several of the record's tracks, his violin chopped and screwed by Dosh and producer Ben Durrant. Premiere ornithologists (bird scientists, get it?) already know that Dosh splits drumming duties with Bowl of Fire's Kevin O'Donnell on tour and on Bird's forthcoming follow-up to The Mysterious Production of Eggs, now being finished in Durrant's Minneapolis studio. Bird and Dosh began collaborating after someone convinced Dosh to give Bird's manager a copy of 2004's Pure Trash. "I guess Andrew liked it," Dosh told Pitchfork, "and he asked me to open for him in Minneapolis in February of last year. And then he saw my set and said, 'What are you doing later in the summer? Wanna get together and play?'" It appears Dosh checked the "yes" box with one of those crayons big enough for your little nephew. "So, we got together, and it worked out pretty cool." But clipped tracks from a violinist aren't the only diversion on The Lost Take, an album that seems set on redefining Martin Dosh's role as an instrumentalist and arranger for most people. This is also the first time Dosh's voice has appeared on record (on opener "One Through Seven") and the first time he's conceptualized an album for a full-band. The process, in a nutshell: In December, Dosh wrote and recorded a set of Korg keyboard sequences. He manually aligned harmonizing sequences of the same tempo, changing the length of individual pieces to add texture. Gentleman then took multiple drum passes over each set of sequences at Tim Herber's Minneapolis studio (Low, the Jayhawks, Fog), intending to have some of his favorite guitarists, bassists, and windmen double the sequences in the studio. Dosh planned to build new beats by re-sampling the results. Wow. And you thought you were pretty slick that time you cooked Mac & Cheese all by yourself. Anyhow, Dosh ended up liking the original sound and chose to forgo the second half of the process, simply sampling some of the additional instruments-- including Bird's four-string work-- on top of the original set of sequences and drums. Sometimes less really is more. Dosh will tour with Bird and Cash McCombs in September, and then plans to peregrinate solo in the Midwest and on the East Coast in support of The Lost Take. Live, Dosh runs several keyboards, percussion instruments, and a drum set through a series of loops, much like those Bird uses for his guitar, violin, and super-whistling skills. Banksy ordered to clean up his elephant act
Dan Glaister in Los Angeles Tuesday September 19, 2006 Guardian The elephant may have been in the room, but by the end of its stay it had lost its sheen. Tai, the 38-year-old painted pachyderm that was the centrepiece of the first major US show by the British graffiti artist Banksy, was scrubbed down on Sunday on the orders of the Los Angeles department of animal services.Visitors to the show on Sunday, the final day of the three-day installation, were met by an elephant-coloured elephant standing in a mock living room. On previous days the elephant had been painted red from trunk to tail and adorned with gold fleur-de-lys to match the wallpaper in the living room. Ed Boks, general manager of the animal services department, ordered that "the elephant be completely scrubbed down to bare skin and that a child-safe face paint be used". The department had initially granted Banksy a permit to use the elephant, which he had hired from local company Have Trunk Will Travel. But when officials saw the result in a crowded, celebrity-laden opening on Thursday night, they tried to rescind the licence. The department, however, had to give five days' notice, by which time the exhibition would have closed. Mr Boks instead ordered the elephant scrubbed clean. "The paint they had been using, although non-toxic, according to government regulations was unsafe and even illegal to use the way they had been using it," Mr Boks said. In a city that takes its animal welfare seriously, the exhibit caused something of a fuss. Whether Banksy, the reclusive 28-year-old British artist and provocateur, had intended to allow the elephant's plight to distract from his grand themes of poverty, political hypocrisy and the future of the planet is debatable. Nevertheless, the elephant featured on the front pages of newspapers from Los Angeles to New York, helping to draw thousands to the show. An hour before its scheduled end on Sunday there were an estimated 2,000 people queueing to enter the exhibit. Guardian Unlimited © Guardian Newspapers Limited 2006Related Groups:
